Museum Janitor

Reports to: Facilities Supervisor

Employment Status: Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hourly Rate: $ 21.00

The Orange County Museum of Art, located on the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus in Costa Mesa, California, seeks an experienced and detail oriented individual to join its team as Museum Janitor.

The Museum Janitor will perform the critical task of maintaining an exceptionally high quality of cleanliness of the Museum building and a strict adherence to safety.

The ideal candidate must have a strong work ethic, and for safety, performance, and productivity, must have the ability to read, write, speak and understand English and follow verbal and written instruction, and have a commitment to keeping a clean and well-maintained environment for Museum visitors and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

●Maintain daily cleanliness in all indoor and outdoor Museum spaces, including galleries, restrooms, offices, and public areas.

●Perform daily cleaning tasks, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming.

●Ensure high-touch surfaces are regularly sanitized and floors are properly maintained.

●Empty and clean all trash receptacles throughout the Museum building on a regular basis, and properly dispose of waste and recyclables in accordance with Museum policy and environmental regulations.

●Monitor and clean restrooms throughout each day, ensuring they are well-stocked with all necessary supplies.

●Promptly report all maintenance issues, needed repairs, supplies or equipment to the Lead Custodian. In the Lead Custodian’s absence, to the Facilities Supervisor.

●Perform routine floor maintenance, promptly address all floor-related incidents, and all emergency clean-up.

●Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, Museum policies and procedures, and read, write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.

●Assist in cleaning up before and after all Museum special events and rental events.

●Collaborate with other Museum departments to ensure a seamless transition between daily cleaning operations and cleaning for special events and rental events.

●Work closely with the Museum’s curatorial and exhibition teams to clean and maintain exhibition spaces.

●Follow established procedures to protect art and displays during cleaning and maintenance activities.

●Maintain the highest level of Safety Standards in compliance with Cal-OSHA Safety Regulations for Janitors and Custodians.

●Ensure proper use of masks, gloves and other safety equipment when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.

●Ensure full compliance with the Museum’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program.

●Report all safety concerns and incidents to the Lead Custodian. In the Lead Custodian’s absence, to the Facilities Supervisor.

Requirements and Qualifications

●Minimum of 2 years professional cleaning experience in a custodial or janitorial role.

●Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, Museum policies and procedures, and read, write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.

●Proficient use of cleaning materials, methods and equipment used in janitorial service.

●Understanding of hazards, accident prevention and safety practices for janitorial.

●Ability to work independently, professionally and efficiently.

●Ability to represent the Museum with a high level of professionalism and adhere to Museum policies.

●Excellent time management skills.

●A sense of hospitality, integrity, pride of workmanship, and a love for cleanliness and organization.

●Extreme attention to the smallest detail.

●Initiative to take on tasks without being told and without being monitored.

●Effective interpersonal skills.

●Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Physical Demands

●Perform duties under a variety of working conditions, indoors and out, in all weather conditions.

●Ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use equipment; see and read printed material with or without vision aids; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.

●Climb up and down stairs and comfortably work at elevations.

●Reach above and below shoulder height.

●Ability to use ladders of varying heights, aerial lift, and other machinery as needed.

●Bend, stoop, reach, lift, and climb to move materials.

●Operate heavy floor care machinery, after receiving minimal instruction.

●Physical agility to walk, stoop, bend, sit, stand, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, squat, crouch, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties for extended periods of time.

●Operate varied hand and power tools and custodial/janitorial equipment.

●Strength and stamina to perform medium to heavy physical work; to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials, objects and containers averaging a weight of 50 pounds or more, and in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
