The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA), located on the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus in Costa Mesa, California, seeks inspirational Educators to facilitate tours and creative experiences that help visitors explore the transformative possibilities of art.
Educators support all aspects of educational programming inspired by OCMA’s exhibitions, including art-making activities, offsite events, public programs, tours, and more. The position designs and facilitates audience-centered experiences for learners that enable personally relevant connections with art. Additionally, Educators contribute to the collaborative, imaginative spirit of the Learning and Engagement Department by attending trainings, evaluating programs, and experimenting with informal and gallery-based pedagogies that uphold best practices in the field of museum education. The position will work primarily with youth audiences through family programs and school tours, but engagement with learners of all ages and backgrounds will be required.
This is an hourly position requiring availability for weekday, weekend, evening, and occasional holiday shifts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Delivery
- Facilitate inquiry and discussion based tours for visitors of all ages and abilities that highlight current exhibitions in order to cultivate community, connections, and curiosity.
- With guidance from Learning and Engagement staff, facilitate tours for museum members, donors, and other stakeholders that respond to the unique interests and priorities of each group.
- Lead multimodal experiences for K–12 students that are adaptable, developmentally appropriate, and learner-centered.
- Deliver a variety of programs for intergenerational audiences both onsite and offsite, including camps, workshops, professional development sessions for teachers, and other hands-on learning formats.
- Prepare and properly store materials to deliver program activities.
- Incorporate academic content standards and interdisciplinary learning strategies into programs and tours as requested.
- Maintain a duty of care while engaging with Museum audiences and stakeholders, including responsible supervision of students and protection of artworks.
- Welcome and greet visitors to the Museum, providing assistance and information as needed.
- Report on programs, including attendance numbers, participant feedback, and other observational notes.
- Conduct program evaluation with groups and participants through various methods.
Lesson, Program, and Tour Development
- Conduct research on artists and artworks represented in Museum exhibitions to ensure strong alignment of gallery teaching with curatorial scholarship.
- Develop tours using appropriate planning procedures and prioritize teaching strategies that expand ideas about creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression.
- Brainstorm and outline lessons for art-making and self-guided activities in consultation with Learning and Engagement staff.
- Assist Learning and Engagement staff with outreach and coordination of programming as requested.
- Contribute to the research and writing of interpretive materials as requested.
Training and Continuing Education
- Attend exhibition walkthroughs, monthly Continuing Education meetings, and other trainings as required.
- Assist with and facilitate collaborative training activities to support mutual growth and knowledge sharing among Educators and other Museum colleagues.Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching and supervising youth, preferably in a creative setting.
- Clear, confident public speaker with the ability to synthesize and communicate conceptual ideas.
- Ability to represent the Museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
- Ability to work independently, manage group dynamics, and exercise good judgment in a variety of situations requiring immediate responses.
- Flexibility to work varying hours week to week, including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays.
Preferred Skills
- Fluency in a language other than English with preference for Spanish and/or American Sign Language. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
- Experience working with people with specific needs, including but not limited to, physical and/or intellectual disabilities.
- Knowledge of art history, art education, universal design for learning, social and emotional learning, and/or culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Maintaining a personal creative practice.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to assist with setup of programs, moving furniture and lifting up to 25 pounds on occasion.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
