Join us for a screening of the newly remastered documentary film Alice Neel in honor of the opening weekend celebration for the Alice Neel: Feels Like Home exhibition. Filmmaker Andrew Neel, Alice Neel’s grandson, weaves together the pieces of the painter’s life using intimate one-on-one interviews with Neel’s family and personal archival videos. The film explores Alice Neel’s life, her interest in painting her extended family and friends, and the legacy of an artist determined to expand beyond the traditional gender expectations of her era.

Alice Neel (1900-1984) was a self-described collector of souls who captured her subjects on canvas through six decades of the 20th century, among them Andy Warhol, Bella Abzug, Allen Ginsberg and Annie Sprinkle. Neel always sought the “authentic,” moving from Greenwhich Village to Spanish Harlem as the Village was gaining reputation in the art scene. Neel delved far into the psyches of her subjects, immersing herself in painting while and also raising two sons in the bohemian world she inhabited.

The film will be screened indoors on Level 2 and the runtime is 83 minutes. Presented in partnership with The Newport Beach Film Festival.

Doors open at 5:00 pm.  Seats are first come, first serve with limited capacity. Admission is free.
