Martin Creed: Work No. 3868 Half the air in a given space
July 3, 2024 – February 16, 2025
An immersive work by multimedia artist Martin Creed (b. 1968, Wakefield, England), Work No. 3868 Half the air in a given space (2024) is made up of hundreds of yellow balloons containing half of the air present in the gallery. Acting as a tangible measure of the air, an otherwise invisible substance that defines free space, this playful inversion of art and space encourages visitors to change the work’s shape and volume themselves. Presented in OCMA’s Yvonne de C Segerstrom Gallery, Half the air in a given space explores the relationship between sculpture and architecture, asking audiences to become an integral component of the artwork themselves.
Half the air in a given space is organized by Heidi Zuckerman, CEO and Director, with support from the entire OCMA staff. OCMA Special Exhibitions are made possible by a Special Exhibitions Endowment Fund supported by SK hynix America, Inc.
