OCMA x UCI: Su Yu-Xin Artist Talk
February 11, 2025, 6:00 PM

OCMA in concert with UC-Irvine (University of California, Irvine)’s student run Visiting Artist Lecture Series (VALS) is happy to announce a new collaborative artist talk with exhibiting artist Su Yu-Xin on Tuesday, February 11, 6PM at Colloquium Room (CAC 3201 3rd Floor) at UCI.
Hosted at UCI, this new collaborative conversation centers around Su’s new exhibition Searching the Sky for Gold and the color theory founded in her treatise: A Color Study Leading Towards Materialism. Focused on the material history of the earth and pigments, Su’s research spans the breadth of seeing through art history to arrive at refreshing ideas around color, paint, place and a robust studio practice uniting theory and practice.
After the lecture, Su will be joined in conversation with Artist, Professor, and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies Liz Glynn to discuss the work and field questions from the audience.
This talk is free and open to all who wish to attend! Please note this program is not at OCMA but offsite at UCI.
Directions to the Colloquium Room (CAC 3201 3rd Floor) at UCI:
Park at the Mesa Parking Structure at UCI. Walk across the bridge to the arts quad and enter the tall Contemporary Art Center (CAC) building on the right (the one with the glass). The room is on the 3rd floor all the way at the end of the hall to the right or left of the elevator.
Los Angeles–based artist Su Yu-Xin (b. 1991, Hualien, Taiwan) transforms natural and synthetic materials into pigments, using them as both a medium for painting and a subject of research. Her work challenges modern color systems by investigating often-overlooked dimensions: the geological origins of pigments, their migrations, and their applications beyond visual art. Through landscapes rendered with pigments gathered from and traced across the Pacific, she unveils the shared historical, geological, and environmental essence of the distant locations she paints. Su holds an MFA degree from Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London, England and a BA in Ink Painting from Taipei National University of Arts, Taiwan.
