07 Dec Elastic Ambience | A Sound Artwork by Julian Day
Elastic Ambience, by Julian Day
Responding to our sense of time metamorphosing during COVID—days stretching into months, hours contracting into minutes—Julian Day offers a series of 24 hour-long soundscapes, creating a ‘clock’ that uses sound to differentiate our sense of passing hours. Inspired by Erik Satie’s century-old concept of ‘furniture music’ and influenced by the rich domain of ambient composition, Elastic Ambience is a set of aural moods that mark the hours.
Starting Tuesday, December 8, 2020, one hour of sound was added each day, until 24 one-hour compositions had accumulated, completing the 24-hour aural clock by 12am on New Year’s Day, 2021. It now remains available to listen to at any time.
