Weekend Studio: Sound, Shape, and Color

Multi-media artist Steve Rodencombined both sound and visual elements in his work.For Now in yellow bloom(2013–14), he created a visual score in which shapes and colors representeddifferent types of sound. Inspired by Roden’s work, participants will listen to live musicians and create layered watercolor paintings representingthe sounds that they hear.
Tickets are $10 or free for residents of Costa Mesa. Advance registration is required, and space is limited. Overflow seating may be available with modified materials. Registrants that arrive more than 15 minutes past the start time cannot be guaranteed entry.
Weekend Studio workshops invite artists of all experience levels to engage with current exhibitions through creative, hands-on activities. Workshops involve materials that are suitable for ages six (6) and up only, and all families must sit together for the duration of the program.

Lisa Yoshida is a violinist and composer in Irvine, CA, and a PhD candidate in the Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology program at the University of California Irvine. She recently completed an Artist Residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Her research intersects traditional violin performance, technology, and compositions centered around identity to create immersive, multimedia narratives.
Dylan Williams is a jazz drummer and composer studying both at the University of California Irvine in the Bachelors of Music program. Originating and operating in Southern California, Dylan has worked and performed across multiple genres and styles creating a blend of traditional jazz values, Rhythm and Blues/soul inspiration, and avant garde experimental proficiency.
